The Last Felony (QC) 2009 Featured Interview

-How is life for you guys these days?

Pretty good,we're working hard on the new album right now. It's pretty much finished and we're really excited by the new material. Studio is set for this summer. We're also getting ready for a month long tour with Beneath The Massacre, Carnifex & Blind Witness. Looking forward to hitting the road this weekend.

-Are you surprised at the hugely positive reaction to Aeon of Suffering?

We're very happy with the reception the album has gotten, and it seems to be accepted by both the old schoold death metal fans as well as the newer deathcore crowd so it's creating a lot of opportunities for us to play with bands of different genres which might be the most suprising part of it's relative success

-What are some of the more unexpected things that happened to The Last Felony since you began your debut album cycle. Any wild tour experiences? Parties that got out of hand? Young (or old) women who forced any members into bed? Fights? Detail, please.

One of the wildest weekends was our first time on the road. We went on a 3 day weekend trip in Ontario with Orphans In coma, Starring Janet Leigh and Closed Casket Funeral. The craziest night ended with us and OIC having to sleep on a public beach because we lost track of the other bands. We got there around 2 AM and were drinking and generally causing havoc (including our bassist and singer of the other band taking a dump on the beach after realizing how it looked very similar to a giant cat litter) when we heard a loud yell coming from the water. We then heard a girl's voice screaming 'My pussy is frozen' so we quickly realized she was skinny dipping. It was pitch dark so we couldn't see her. We went into the water, yelled obscenities at her. One of the orphan guys kept trying to run up to her and pee on her to keep her warm. She wouldn't come out of the water because we were on the shore where their was more light. She eventually ran out of the water and we just had time to quickly jump in front of her, take a picture and she ran off. We checked the picture and she was the ugliest fat piece of shit we had ever seen! So when the weekend was over, we posted the picture on the internet as the mini-tour poster with the band logos. Poisson chapeau!

-To perform your style of death metal with conviction and precision, it definitely takes greater-than-average levels of confidence. However, I have heard rumours of Last Felony having a reputation of being somewhat over-confident. Are these rumors at all true? Is there any beef that you would like to squash with other bands or people?

Overconfident? I honestly have no idea were that rumour might of started, but if you're investing as much time, effort and money as we are into your band, you better be pretty damn confident in your material and abilities, if not you might as well go home, practice and write better songs.

-The Last Felony are one of many first-class Montreal death metal bands, and one of the youngest. Which Montreal artists, past or present, old or young like yourselves, do you appreciate and respect for their work and influence on yourselves? Any interesting stories involving other Montreal bands?

The Montreal scene is about as inbred as a hillbilly village, all the bands know each other and have swapped members. For example, our old singer now sings for Ion Dissonance, and our new bassist used to play for them. One of the funniest moments involving several Montreal bands has to be Terrorfest, a failed festival in Toronto which had very bad attendance and featured several bands from here. We all ended up playing for each other, so it was pretty stupid to make the 6 hour drive to Toronto.

-Can we agree that Shades of Dusk’s new album is pretty much incredible? What is your relationship with those guys?

We're not close friends with them, but we've seen them evolve in the scene throughout the years and it's great to see them put out such a solid piece of work.

-What are some of the trends in Montreal that make you angry? Could be in the music scene, or just in general.

I wouldn't say anything here really makes us angry, to be honest, we kind of just do our own thing, hang out with the people we like and go see the bands we enjoy. We couldn't care less about anything else.

-Do you follow American politics much? Obama is in Canada today, and it seems like everyone is pretty happy about this. Do you have any perspectives on the current U.S. government situation?

We're not very politically-minded people, we think it's a bit stupid the fuss people are making about his visit yet. He's probably going to change a lot of things for the better in the U.S. but the media coverage this has been getting is a bit retarded.

-Is society in a good place right now? If not, what are the things making it bad?

Depends how you look at it. A lot of things are wrong. We have the appearance of freedom more than freedom itself I find, but if you focus on your personal goals and ignore the things you have no control over and that, in the end, have very little tangible impact on your day to day life, it can be a decent place to live.

-To what extent has the hardcore scene, music, or values impacted The Last Felony, either as a band or personally?

We've never been in big into any scene, like I said, we do our own thing. We can go see a death metal band one day, a hardcore band the next, we listen to a bit of everything and try to keep an open mind. I'm playing Anaal Nakrath as I write this, which is probably not what most of the hardcore kids out there would expect. As far as values go, we don't think any band, scene or style should come with a pre-defined set of values. When I pop in a CD I don't ask myself "I wonder what this band's opinion on abortion is" I just listen and decide if it's good music or not, I couldn't care less what they believe in.

-Do you guys enjoy drinking? Doing drugs? If so, which ones? Best wasted stories?

Everyone drinks in the band but were not one of those bands you meet on the road where every member is wasted every night. Most of us smoke weed too, but that's about it when it comes to drugs. Most of the stupid stuff we do to keep entertained is when we're sober and bored, like waving down a taxi just to yell the word "Manbridge" over and over until the driver gives up and drives away.

-Who is the toughest guy in the band? Why?

One of the first nights we met our bassist we brought him to a strip bar, and he decided to staple his 5$ for the cover into his forehead.I think that answers your question.haha

-What do you think of Eric and Galy Records?

He has done a phenomenal job promoting the record and getting us on the best tours available in Canada. We really made a good choice to go with him for our first album.

-Best TV shows? Books you’re currently reading?

I just got the first season of DRAWN TOGETHER on DVD to watch in the van on our next tour, I've been told by other band members its one of the best cartoons ever to hit the air. I also just watched the first episode of EASTBOUND & DOWN on HBO and it's fucking hilarious . This is a new TV shows so looking foward to see the complete season.

-Final shout-outs or plugs to friends, bands, or companies you support?

Check out Unfallen from Quebec City, another great up and coming band of young kids making insanely technical death metal. Also our bassist's others band, Nefastus Dies, brutal Black/Death & Vatican, Black&Roll.

And for all guitar players and bass players check out Guerrilla Guitars, awesome custom guitars exactly like you want them!! So come see us on our upcoming tour, all dates are on our Myspace www.myspace.com/thelastfelony. we also have some dates added in Quebec with Misery Index and Cryptopsy when we come back from the West Coast in April/May.

Thanks for your time.

Brilliant interview and

Brilliant interview and writeup there guys. Only up until recently I've been listening to some of their music and have to say that it's a little different to what I would generally listen too, but to be honest I love it.

Liked the picture and their views on Obama too, think the whole sense of everyone greeting him like a movie star is just a little bit over the top to be honest. It's like there's someone more famous than a politian is in town, but when it turns out its Obama, it really does seem a little confusing.
